Learn about Black Patriots and Loyalists with Alicia Cohen and Gertrude Evans
Alicia Cohen and Gertrude Evans, members of the Black History Committee of the Friends of Thomas Balch Library, examine perspectives, struggles, and triumphs faced by Black Americans, including several from Loudoun County, in their dual battles for liberty and equality. They will highlight the significant contributions of Crispus Attucks, Elizabeth Freeman, James Armistead Lafayette, and other Black Americans.
Honoring Black Patriots and Loyalists in the American Revolution is part of Loudoun Museum’s Revolutionary Stories: Loudoun and Beyond program series. This program series features speakers who will dive deep into the stories of Loudoun’s diverse people and perspectives of the Revolutionary era. Like contemporary times, Loudoun County was the home of diverse people and perspectives during the Revolutionary era. By highlighting this historical diversity, this series aims to develop a more complete narrative of the Revolutionary period.
Revolutionary Stories is open to the public, and presentations will be uploaded to our YouTube channel. Check out Loudoun Museum’s social media, website, and sign up for our newsletter to find out about program announcements, updates, and more. The program series is made possible in part by a grant from Virginia Humanities.
Upcoming programs in the Revolutionary Stories series include:
The Tory and the Patriot: The Unlikely Friendship of Nicholas Creswell and Thomson Mason with Ken Bancroft, Public Historian – May 16
This program takes place at Loudoun Museum on the second floor, no elevator is available.
